Concert Series: NAFA Orchestra

Under the direction of Lim Yau, the NAFA Orchestra presents Georges Bizet's Symphony in C, described by Martin Du Pré Cooper as brimming with "flowing and resourceful counterpoint, orchestral expertise, and a happy blend of the Viennese classical style with French melody". Soprano Joyce Lee Tung, an alumna and currently an adjunct lecturer with the NAFA School of Music, is the soloist in Maurice Ravel's Shéhérazade song cycle. Opening the concert is Charles Gounod's Ballet Music from Faust.

Rhapsodic Rachmaninoff w/Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra

Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini is an ingenious whirlwind of musical styles and forms - a virtuosic tour de force for piano with 24 variations inspired by the last of Paganini’s famously difficult caprices and performed by pianist Lilya Zilberstein. Beethoven’s visceral 7th symphony features dancing rhythms, a melancholic Allegretto, and the powerful momentum of its gripping finale.

Ensemble Virama is back! For this long anticipated reunion, the chamber music collective will play Swedish folk tunes, arranged by our very own Bernice Ooi, as well as exciting rarities: selections from Darius Milhaud’s entertaining and animesque Suite, and the Malaysian premiere of Franz Liszt’s Elégie, performed here in its original version. The concert culminates in Johannes Brahms's ever popular Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, in a version inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's 1937 orchestration.

Teaching Music Goes On(line) - Music Teacher’s Conference
Learning Objectively: Lessons from Teaching Myself a Wind Instrument

This presentation will look into Deliberate Practice, as espoused by the late cognitive psychologist Anders Ericsson. Using recordings from 14 years of instrumental practice, oboist Howard Ng attempts to draw parallels between Ericcson’s research and his own personal growth as a wind player. Through this exercise, the presenter hopes to shine light on the elements that would lead to successful music-making, despite the lack of professional teaching resources for Western Classical wind playing in the Southeast Asian region.

Homo Sapiens breathe to stay moving; but the same process has also blessed us with ways of making music with wind instruments. With this in mind, it is especially poignant that all the composers featured in this programme are indeed, alive. Join Ensemble Virama oboist Howard Ng, as he shares with us five contemporary compositions for solo oboe. He will be joined by fellow Ensemble Virama violinist Bernice Ooi, who will discuss and investigate the stories behind the music. The performances will all be pre-recorded in September 2020, with the exception of Yii Kah Hoe's "Echos", which was presented by Ensemble Virama in 2017.

A Q&A session will be held at the end of the evening.

The concert will also feature our special guests, Flutescents, who won the 2019 Malaysian Wind Music Prize and who just performed recently in the Australian Flute Festival 2019. It will be Flutescents' first ever performance in Kota Kinabalu!
